Chemical peel

A doctor applies an acid solution for a set time to remove the outermost layers of skin. Strength is chosen for your skin type.

Downtime: From none to about a week of flaking, depending on depth
Course: Usually a series, a few weeks apart
Take note: Not during pregnancy, with active infection, or if you’ve recently taken isotretinoin. Tell the doctor about any medication.

Laser for pigmentation

Short pulses of light target pigment in the skin. The device and settings depend on your skin tone and the type of pigmentation.

Downtime: Redness for a day or two; dark spots may darken before they fade
Course: Several sessions are common
Take note: Some pigmentation, such as melasma, can worsen with the wrong settings. Diagnosis comes first.

Prescription skincare

A doctor prescribes topical treatments after examining your skin, with a written routine and a follow-up date.

Downtime: None, though some products cause dryness at first
Course: Reviewed every few months
Take note: Some ingredients aren’t suitable in pregnancy or when breastfeeding.
